The ScoutTed Pre-Trip Checklist

Our Non-Negotiable Pre-Trip Ritual: The 5 Essential Things We Vet to Ensure Every ScoutTed Listing is Reliable

In our last chapter, Building the Map Before Hitting the Road, we talked about a big realization: the most important part of the journey happens before you turn the key. It’s about building the plan.

For us, that plan isn’t a vague dream—it’s a checklist. Whether we’re scouting a new route for the community or planning a personal adventure, these are the five concrete things we research every single time. Think of it as our “Phase Zero” for every trip.

1. The Regulatory Deep Dive 🧾

This is non-negotiable, especially in Southeast Asia where rules can change at regional borders. We don’t just ask, “Can we go there?” We dig into:

  • Vehicle Rules: Are there restrictions on vehicle type, size, or modifications? Are temporary import permits needed?
  • Pet Protocols: What are the entry requirements for Scout and Ted? Is a health certificate, specific vaccination, or microchip needed? What are local leash laws?
  • Local Permits: Do we need a special permit to camp in a national park or protected area?

Our Tip: We always look for the official government tourism or immigration website for the most current info, then cross-check with recent traveler reports.

2. The Community Intel Hunt 🗣️

The best information often comes from those who’ve just been there. We scour:

  • Local Expats & Traveler Groups on Facebook for recent posts.
  • Overlanding forums for trip reports from the past 6-12 months.
  • The comment sections on other travel blogs for nuggets of updated wisdom.

We’re not just looking for the good news; we’re listening for recent warnings about road closures, changed policies, or areas that have become less traveler-friendly.

3. The Satellite Scout 🛰️

Before we commit to a remote track, we take to the skies—digitally. Using Google Earth or maps with satellite overlay helps us:

  • Assess Road Surfaces: Is that “scenic route” a paved road, a gravel track, or a seasonal riverbed?
  • Identify Potential Overnight Spots: We look for clearings, beach access, or quiet pull-offs that aren’t listed anywhere.
  • Check Bridge Crossings and Terrain: Is the pass suitable for our vehicle’s size and clearance?

This step turns a squiggly line on a map into a visual understanding of the challenge ahead.

4. The Contingency Map 🩹

Hope for the best, plan for the rest. We map our “what if” points:

  • Mechanics & Parts: Where is the nearest capable workshop along our route?
  • Veterinary Services: We pinpoint clinics that could help Scout and Ted in an emergency.
  • Supply Caches: We note towns with markets for fresh food, water refill stations, and fuel stops.

Marking these on our offline map means we’re never more than a calculated detour away from help.

5. The “Leave No Trace” Plan 🌿

Our adventures only work if we leave places as good—or better—than we found them. Our final planning step is deciding:

  • Waste Management: How will we handle our trash and recycling? Where are the proper disposal points?
  • Water Source Etiquette: If we source water from a stream or well, what’s the responsible method to avoid contamination?
  • Respect for Locals: Are we passing through sensitive cultural or religious areas? What’s the appropriate conduct?

For us, this isn’t an afterthought. It’s the first principle of exploration.
