Small Space, Big Adventure
Camping Storage HacksThat borrowed campervan in the Netherlands had zero wasted space. Every drawer, every cupboard, every corner had a purpose. Living in 6 square meters for four weeks taught us more about organization than any online video could. Here are our favorite storage hacks – tested on the road, proven in real life.
The Simple Rule:
After weeks of trial and error, we discovered three simple rules that changed everything: everything needs a home, vertical space is valuable space, and if it doesn’t fold flat, reconsider. Here are the 10 storage hacks that turned our tiny home from chaotic to comfortable.
1. Vertical Is Your Best Friend 💡
Floor space is precious. Walls are free real estate.
Hang mesh organizers on doors or walls for shoes, toiletries, snacks
Magnetic strips hold knives, tools, spice jars
Command hooks everywhere : for bags, towels, headphones
2. Collapsible Everything 💡
If it doesn’t flatten, fold, or nest, reconsider.
Collapsible silicone bowls and kettles – use then store flat
Nesting cookware – one pot set becomes one stack
Foldable wash basin – dishwashing, laundry, storage, then flat
3. Vacuum Bags = Magic 💡
Soft stuff eats space. Vacuum bags fix that.
Compression bags for clothes, blankets, jackets
Hand-roll versions work without a vacuum
Great for off-season gear storage too

4. Clear Is King 💡
You can’t find what you can’t see.
Clear stackable bins – see contents without opening
Label everything (phone charger, first aid, snacks)
Ziploc bags for small items inside bigger bags
5. Use Every Hidden Space 💡
Under seats? Storage.
Above cab? Storage.
Inside doors? Storage.
Gap-filling organizers slide into those useless spaces beside fridges or seats
6. The “One-Bag” Rule for Daily Stuff 💡
Each person gets one small bag for daily items (power bank, sunscreen, snacks, jacket). Everything else stays packed. No digging through main storage 20 times a day.
7. Stackable Food Containers 💡
Round containers waste space. Square and rectangular?
Square stackable food storage – fits like Tetris in coolers and cabinets
Transparent so you see leftovers
Nest when empty
8. Multi-Use Furniture 💡
A bench with storage inside
A table that folds to nothing
Camping chairs that pack into small bags and clip outside your pack
9. The “One In, One Out” Rule 💡
Buy something new? Something old must leave. Space is fixed. Don’t let stuff accumulate.
10. Pre-Trip Organization Check 💡
Before leaving, ask: “Do I know where everything is without looking?” If no, reorganize until yes. Chaos multiplies in small spaces.
The ScoutTed Takeaway:
You don’t need a bigger van. You need better organization. These hacks turned our tiny borrowed home into a space that felt comfortable, calm, and completely functional. Good storage = good trip.
