Paddle Ready
5 Things to Prepare for Your First SUP Adventure 🗺️ EXPLORE THE MAP 👋 Join the CommunityIntro:
Gliding across a quiet lake at sunrise is magic. But a bad SUP trip can be frustrating. After a few paddles (and some wipeouts), here’s how we prepare for a great day on the water.
1. Check Your Gear Before You Go:
Don’t wait until you’re at the water to find a leak. Inflate your board at home to check for holes. Make sure your fin is secure and your paddle locks tight. Pack a small repair kit (a patch and some tape can save the day).
2. Dress for the Water, Not the Air:
This is key. If you fall in, the water is colder than the air. In Vietnam’s central highlands lakes, the water can be surprisingly cool. Quick dry leggings, a rash guard (for sun protection too), and water shoes are smart. Avoid cotton , it gets heavy and cold when wet.
3. Safety First (Always)
SUP looks calm and peaceful, but water demands respect. We’ve had friends drift into boat lanes, get caught in unexpected currents, and lose boards to wind. Don’t be them.
Leash: Always attach your leash to your ankle or calf. The board is your floatation device. Lose the board, lose your safety.
Life vest: Even good swimmers should wear one, especially in new waters with currents or boat traffic. It’s not uncool. It’s smart.
Tell someone where you’re paddling and when you’ll be back. Sounds dramatic, but remote lakes don’t have lifeguards.
Check for boat traffic. Those fishermen don’t always see you.
4. Plan for Wind & Weather:
Check the forecast. Morning is often calmest, afternoon winds can turn a relaxing paddle into a tough workout. If the water looks choppy, save the SUP for another day.
5. The After Paddle Plan:
Have dry clothes and a towel ready in the van. Rinse your board with fresh water (especially after saltwater) before packing it away to prevent mildew. Then, enjoy that well-earned snack with a view.
